Disneynature Penguins Review

Disclosure: I was invited to attend an advanced screening of this film.

Disneynature launched 10 years ago, bringing the world’s top nature filmmakers together to capture a variety of wildlife subjects and stories. The studio has a special way of acquainting people with the other inhabitants of planet earth. There’s just something in learning about an animal’s life experience that makes me look at my own differently.  Disneynature films include Earth, Oceans, African Cats, Chimpanzee, Bears, Monkey Kingdom and Born in China with its newest, Penguins, being the 8th film.

In Penguins we follow one Adélie penguin in Antarctica named Steve. Along with this penguin you’ll be introduced to the incredible landscape of the coldest place on the planet. What a beautiful film. Penguins is also quite silly as Ed Helms, from The Office and The Hangover, narrates. I never really thought about a day in the life of a penguin before this. It’s busy! Steve and his massive colony follow an annual routine. His story includes love, adventure and fatherhood. It’s my favorite when an animal has one love in their life. Steve and his lady memorize each other’s voice to remember each other when they reunite. I swooned. Also stay for the credits so you can catch a glimpse behind the scenes and see how Penguins was filmed. It’s pretty surreal.

Penguins is an excellent movie choice for nature lovers, homeschool families or anyone looking to see something different on the big screen. Note that the circle of life is shown in Penguins and it can be suspenseful but it’s done in a tactful way to not be too hard to see.

Penguins is in theaters on April 17th, 2019. For every ticket sold opening week, April 17th-23rd, 2019, Disneynature will make a donation to the Wildlife Conservation Network to help protect penguins across the southern hemisphere.
