Disclosure: Disney sent me a Star Wars gift box including digital movie codes to give away.
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is now available on Blu-Ray, DVD and digital! Disney+ released this image of the Star Wars narrative timeline which is helpful. Basically it’s the chronological order in which the movies take place. It’s very different than the order the movies were released in but a good visual to get a grip on when things happened.
Star Wars Movie in Order
The bottom row of films featured on this image make up the three trilogies of the Skywalker saga. I recommend viewing in the order listed here, the order they were released:
Original Trilogy
Episode IV | Star Wars: A New Hope (1977)
Episode V | Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back (1980)
Episode VI | Star Wars: Return of the Jedi (1983)
Prequel trilogy
Episode I | Star Wars: The Phantom Menace (1999)
Episode II | Star Wars: Attack of the Clones (2002)
Episode III | Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith (2005)
Sequel trilogy
Episode VII | Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015)
Episode VIII | Star Wars: The Last Jedi (2017)
Episode IX | Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (2019)
The Skywalker Legacy: Feature Length Documentary | This is the stand out bonus feature from Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. My favorite part is Daisy Ridley training for the role of Rey. It’s mesmerizing to see footage from the set and movie footage without the special effects. Also, Adam Driver. One of my favorite parts of the film is the dancing in the dessert and there’s great insight into rehearsal for that as well! The true jewel of the documentary is the John Williams part. Director J.J. Abrams walks us through the greatest tribute I’ve ever seen in a movie.

I like that they dive into the “villain” and explain why they are the way that they are. The SW villains are actually my favorite parts!
Love all the fun you are sharing! These movies are seriously such a great escape in times like this, they are so full of heart and fun and love!
Just watched the series for the first time! Love all the movies…and seeing how the story evolves!
I love that it gave me my first princess who didn’t need saving. Leia was a fighter for what was right.
Thank you for sharing this information about the chronological order of the Star Wars movies!! I’m going to follow your suggestion and watch the movies in the order they were released since I’ve only seen bits and pieces from the early movies over the years! My favorite part about Star Wars is how it has brought together fans of all ages and different generations. People of all ages truly love Star Wars! Thank you again for sharing your thoughts! I love reading your blog!
I love how they were all made at different times but tells such a great and cohesive story.
I have loved Star Wars since I was a little girl, because it was something I could watch with my dad and we both would be happy. And as I grew older, the more I understand it and the more I appreciate it for the art it is and how it joins people ❤️
Having been born in 1972. I am a huge fan of the original trilogy. I can remember standing in line at our local theatre (a line that wrapped around the building) to see New Hope…yes, I remember that far back! My Dad always liked the original films but wasn’t a crazy Star Wars fan…he wasn’t waiting in line opening night for the most recent films 😉
At any rate, for some reason, the original films remind me of my Dad and nostalgia for my childhood. They always have. The opening score and text scroll get me every time. I lost my Dad in October of last year so the films will hold an even finder place in my memories now.
I like Star Wars movies because they’re good for everyone! Sci-fi for my husband, relationships/family for me, and kids love the cute characters and lightsaber fights 🙂
I love the story lines in the Star Wars movies!
I would love to see this movie! My husband and I unfortunately didn’t get a chance to see it in theaters due to money but we can’t wait to watch this. Han Solo is the best 💜
Love these movies for the escapism! Even though they reflect real life struggles and themes, I get so lost in the story I escape reality!
I love the action and the stories portrayed! Also, they keep making adorable characters. Babu Frick…cmon!
I love that I was obsessed with them as a child of the 80’s (I wanted Ewok babies instead of human ones) and now I get to share them with my kids! My 14 yr old has all the star wars legos and knows all the movies, my 11 yr old has a chewie/porg obsession, my just turned 5 yr old thinks she’s Princess Leia and can pilot the Millennium Falcon much better then I can, and my 2 yr old….he was induced 3 weeks early on May the 4th, he of course has a Star Wars/Disney nursery, we named him Finn, and his first words after mama and dada were “pew pew”. We are a Star Wars family 😊
Honestly, I had to learn to like them because my husband has always been a fan, and I’m a bit mom!😂
UGH! That should have said BOY mom!🙈
Star Wars
Space Battles, Special effects, Soundtrack, Yoda, Ewoks
Have loved Star Wars since I was a child because of the entire Star Wars universe! Escaping to other worlds and galaxies!
The Driods are my absolute favorite part of the whole Star Wars saga! There is always a loveable droid to root for and love!
I love the message that these movies send! Family, hope, preserving through adversity against all odds! And the idea that people can change from who they were they just need someone to help them see it!
I love that no matter when the movies are made every age can enjoy them! My son, myself, and my dad LOVE Star Wars!
I like that the movies bring us together as a family because my boys are obsessed with it.
I love how timeless it could be and you can enjoy with your whole family
I just love how other worldly it is. I grew up watching Star Wars and now to just continue the love for it is so fun! I feel like there are so many good characters and story lines it just sucks you in and makes you care about what is going on and who’s it’s affecting. It’s powerful considering it’s all fictional.
I lile how in depth the Star Wars universe is – so many characters, back stories, languages, planets, etc. So fun!
I like that the movies bring families together. I love having Star Wars movie nights with my husband and pup!
I love the Star Wars movies because my whole family can enjoy them together!
I was a freshman in college in 1977 and I absolutely loved this movie! I have always loved action adventure movies and these are the ultimate! Thank goodness I have raised 3 die hard Star Wars fans and my 2 oldest grandsons are well on their way to fandom. My 3 year old granddaughter loves to march around with the Darth Vader mask chanting “dum dum dum dum de dum”😂. When my daughter and I visited Batuu for the first time last September, my 10 month old grandson wore a Yoda romper with “Too cute I am” on the back and Yoda ears on the front. The cast members, including Chewy and Rey, went crazy over him. We are all die hard rebels❤️.
Thank you for all of the social distancing fun you are doing for us:) I love that Star Wars makes me feel like everything will work out in the end.
Ahhh this has me hyped for the bonus footage! I love seeing behind the scenes footage, especially for such an iconic story. Thanks for the great review!
I enjoy that it’s multi-generational!
I love that the saga spans generations and still lives on in our imaginations!
I love how the Star Wars movies take you to a galaxy far far away, and how you then get to be transported into the movie when you visit Galaxy’s Edge! 💕
I like the stories behind the characters and that anything can happen.
I love the humor and action scenes!!
I like that they give me hope especially now. Leia was my Princess in 1978 and will always be my first Princess. I have been able to bond with my boys over these movies and they will continue to be part of our life
I love the characters and their backstories and how they are all tied together.
I love the complexity of all the characters. Each strong personality has a strong storyline to back it up.
Honestly, I just love how much of a cultural phenomenon it is! There are only so many recognizable movie series like Star Wars, and I love how now matter the age, race, gender, etc. people can come together and love Star Wars like they have!
A wise question indeed but yet requires simple answer(in a yoda voice) ….star wars is a tradition in my family and I’m passing it on to my kid,its a fantasy world that takes your breath away
I guess I just like the adventure of them all. They’re fun and talk about themes of lightness and darkness which is so cool!!
I get so invested in the relationships that sometimes I forget to enjoy the landscape and amazing features of the Star Wars Saga! I was reminded of this when my Assistant Principal started watching it in chronological order while we are following our shelter in place. She was asking me questions about space and then creatures reminiscent of the Dinosuar era. These were actually her Mom’s questions as they decided to have a viewing party even though they live in separate houses. They watch one “together” a night and then talk about it after on FaceTime. I thought this was an awesome idea and I look forward to her thought provoking questions after each viewing! The most interesting thing that I learned through her questions was why the movies have an eastern influence. My Husband explained to me to share with her that they are reflecting the works of Akira Kurosawa, the famous Japanese director from the 50-60s. His work permeates the entire saga and the Jedi’s principles imitate eastern philosophies. I love being schooled on things that I otherwise would have probably never been enlightened on!
My favorite thing about Star Wars is the theme of light vs dark. It’s not at all what it seems and there is so much nuisance that I love to speculate about.
I love the stories that the Star Wars movies tell and everything that it stands for. I especially love the music in each movie, how it brings together each scene so well!
I love that it’s something that our whole family can enjoy together. We love Star Wars!!
I love the fantasy of it all.
I just finished the series (minus Rise of Skywalker!) for the first time this week, and I just love the amazing storytelling! The characters, soundtrack, and complexity of the world really draws you in. Loved them!
I only recently got into the Star Wars movies when my husband and I watched them before we went to see Galaxy’s Edge for the first time. I love how the storyline just draws you in, even if you aren’t a sci-fi kind of person! There’s always that one relatable character that makes you want to see more! Also…what’s not to love about BB-8?
The storyline is an amazing creation that has been apart of so many generations. From my grandparents, to my parents, and down to me, we have all grown up with Star Wars. I can’t wait to see where the next adventure will take place in the Star Wars universe!!
I love the message of hope and that there is a balance between light and dark, but also that “dark” can be brought to the “light.” I also just love the random humor peppered through the movies to make the characters more relatable and human.
What a fun way to watch!! My favorite parts of the movie are the connections you can feel from the characters toward one another. I feel like it just comes out of the screen and you can feel their sadness, anger, happiness, all of them!
I loved the outer space travel. I’m originally from a small town in Alabama so the thought of distant travel fascinated me. I remember seeing the first movie in the theater in 1977.
I love how they bring people together. I have made so many amazing friends because we all love the movies.
I love the detail of the story and how creative it is, the whole galaxy and different characters were all thought up in someone’s head. I also love that it’s something my husband and I bonded over. He was a fan his whole life and then when we started dating he introduced me to it and I really loved it so now it’s become our thing together that we can enjoy together.
I love the whole idea of Star Wars. Princess Leia was the first princess I felt like I could really get behind, she was a hero. Growing up we watched it all the time, then I was lucky enough to marry a guy that loves Star Wars as much (if not more) than I do. One of my very favorite things is to watch the Original Trilogy with our daughter, she just loves it so much. Darth Vader is her favorite character, hands down. She even has Vader dress up clothes.
I love it because it literally brought my husband and I together. He used Star Wars as a pick up line to get me to go on a date with him and have been together ever since. It was part of our wedding and will continue to always be a big part of our lives. 💜
Having seen Star Wars (as it was known back then) in the theater with my family, I have very vivid happy memories associated with the original trilogy. The utter fantasy and escapism brings me such joy! Thank you for all you do!
I love the Star Wars movies because the plots never go in the direction you think. There is always surprise, suspense, and all out shock!
I didn’t watch any of them until I was an adult and now I can’t get enough of them!
I like them for a lot of reasons, but mostly because they have heroes of all races, shapes, and sizes.
Also my Dad introduced me to nerd culture via Star Wars; I have good memories of being little and going to the movies to see prequels with him. 💜
I love how intricate and well planned the series is. You have to really pay attention to all of the movies to get all of the references. I also love how it brings generations together because it has spanned so many decades!
I love the themes that play through the series and how timeless they are!
I’ve loved these movies since I was a kid. I love that I can now watch them with my family!
I love that Star Wars is something from my childhood and helped shape my imagination that I can share with the next generation like my nephews and niece or my students
The villains rock, they’re cooler, slicker, more fascinating than the heroes and say better dressers.
Love the good vs evil concept (and of course that good wins!) as well as the idea of HOPE!!
I love that these movies allow for all generations to bond over an amazing series. This series has strong female characters even when the series started which is not always common and the series continues to carry out this tradition.
I’ve loved the movies since I was a kid. I love how they connect people across generations, and I love the strong female characters in the movies.
I love everything about Star Wars….. I don’t know where to start. I’m so emotionally involved with all of these fictional characters. Star Wars has brought me so much happiness when I’ve felt alone. I love that it’s something I can share with my kid, and he loves it as well.

I’ve actually not seen the rise of Skywalker! Someone spoiled it for me so I decided I would wait for the dvd or for it to come out on Disney plus 🙂
