Onward is the tale of a quest of two brothers trying to bring their dad back for just one day using a spell. This story of brotherhood and magic has the recipe for courage in the details. Set in a world of sword and sorcery, Onward celebrates magic in a classic way. More than anything this movie is a lesson in believing in yourself and using what you’ve got.
The folks at Pixar have a way of bringing strong emotions into their storytelling. If you’ve lost a parent or close loved one, Onward may awaken some feelings you’d prefer to leave dormant. Some moments in Onward may not be appropriate for those mourning a recent loss. I say this not just to deter but to make you aware because expectations change everything.
Like all Pixar movies, Onward brings humor and inspiration. There’s a lot of wisdom to be found in casting spells apparently. This is the major takeaway for me and what I’ll fondly remember.
