The Spell Block Tango, a YouTube video produced by Todrick Hall and Marlon Wayans’ new production company What The Funny, is making it’s way around the web with 1.2 million views in its first 2 days. This version of the Chicago classic has Disney Villains Maleficent, Cruella, Ursula, Scar, the Evil Queen and the Queen of Hearts entrancing viewers with phenom vocals and sassy, yet tasteful, representations of the evil characters. A flawless performance would be expected of this celeb studded cast, though. Adam Lambert opens this number with a Captain Hook cameo and I never imagined I’d see Glee’s own Amber Riley as Ursula. Shoshana Bean, once Elphaba, here Cruella, Pia Toscano, from American Idol, is Maleficent, Cassie Scerbo, from the Bring It On sequels, is the Evil Queen and Kimberly Cole plays the Queen of Hearts. Todrick, himself, is Scar. Dancing circles around everyone, particularly Ursula, is Blake McGrath from season 1 of So You Think You Can Dance. WOW, he’s impressive. The kicker is that his choreography isn’t even elaborate, he’s just so precise.
This YouTube video is truly a production number. If ‘all the world’s a stage’, entertainers can leverage the internet as the universe. Nothing will ever touch live performances or full length features but there is something to be said about short films online. Whether it be web series, music videos, etc. the power of social networks can drive media farther than anything else. I look forward to the time where it’s a cultural norm for performers to make a living solely through digital entertainment if they wish. This gives actors, singers, dancers and directors complete creative control and gives us gems like this.
Here is the Spell Block Tango with [warning] adult themes just like the musical, Chicago.
