Zootopia Review

ZOOTOPIA – The modern mammal metropolis of Zootopia is a city like no other. Comprised of habitat neighborhoods like ritzy Sahara Square and frigid Tundratown, it’s a melting pot where animals from every environment live together—a place where no matter what you are, from the biggest elephant to the smallest shrew, you can be anything. But when optimistic Officer Judy Hopps arrives, she discovers that being the first bunny on a police force of big, tough animals isn’t so easy. Determined to prove herself, she jumps at the opportunity to crack a case, even if it means partnering with a fast-talking, scam-artist fox, Nick Wilde, to solve the mystery. Walt Disney Animation Studios’ “Zootopia,” a comedy-adventure directed by Byron Howard (“Tangled,” “Bolt”) and Rich Moore (“Wreck-It Ralph,” “The Simpsons”) and co-directed by Jared Bush (“Penn Zero: Part-Time Hero”), opens in theaters on March 4, 2016. ©2015 Disney. Zootopia is more than I could have imagined, greater than any trailer could hint and its own species of animated movie entirely. It’s been quite a while since I’ve loved a new Disney movie this much. Zootopia instantly became one of my all-time favorites. I wanted a sequel before I even left the theatre and I’ve heard so many others excited at the thought of a sequel or show. It’s not just me. People are loving Zootopia especially with all the inside jokes it brings. It scores high in all the most important ways for me. The animal characters are humorously great renditions of people stereotypes, the messages are ones our culture is instinctively hungry for and there’s a mystery that is just plain fun to follow.

Zootopia is a city but the world in this movie seems to go on forever. Every nook and cranny hides detail, poking fun at the mammals that inhabit the skyscraper laden metropolis. The slogan ‘anyone can be anything’ beckons little bunny Judy Hopps to take her dream of becoming a police officer by the horns. She’s positive, resilient and an absolute go-getter while being polite and all the way adorable. I don’t particularly indulge in movie or theme park merchandise, especially at the moment as I’m trying to go a little more minimalist, but I had to have a carrot pen like Judy does in the movie and was thrilled to see that Disney made one. My friend also gave me a Judy Hopps plush and I’m so happy about it. She’s just a character that makes you want to take on the world with open, loving arms. Judy is her own cheerleader, a problem solver and does it all at high speed, not letting anyone’s opinion of her change her idea of herself. Judy Hopps is the perfect character for a young girl or boy to be inspired by.

This movie is really important. Zootopia has a herd of positive messages that naturally shine through the intriguing story and all of the funnies. Accept others despite differences. Believe in yourself completely. Never give up. Go against the odds. Do the right thing. And I love that there’s a girl that wants to be a cop. It’s slightly untraditional and our law enforcement officers definitely need some love right now.  Zootopia is a total feel good movie. You’ll leave happy like you’ve just gone on an excellent Kilamanjaro Safari where all of the animals were out and playing. You’ll laugh and you’ll feel inspired and entertained. The whole fam will love Zootopia and not in that ‘I liked it because my kids liked it’ kind of way. The story is loaded with so much goodness from the silly ways we see animals making life in a big city to the serious but carefully communicated lessons that you hardly realize are lessons. Zootopia has endless possibilities and I hope we get to explore more of the city and life with Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde in movies to come.

Saw the movie early a few weeks ago and round 2 is tonight. People keep asking me how it was and what it’s about. I barely even mentioned the whole buddy cop plot line and only discuss its beautiful social commentary. This movie, like Inside Out, is fun for kids but really made for the adults. So you know, it’s perfect for those of us who never stop being a kid.

I have to say Disney has done it again with another movie that has touched my heart. As I prepare to enter college this coming fall, the movie really spoke to me. The message about never giving up and following your dreams no matter what obstacles one faces was the perfect amount of inspiration for me. And I have to say I absolutely loved how clever and cute the entire movie was!!😄
