Wreck-It Ralph Review

In theaters November 2, 2012When I first saw the preview for this movie at the 2011 D23 Expo I wasn’t  thrilled. It looked to be far from the most anticipated movie of the year and very unconventional compared to our usual Disney animated film. How wrong I was. The tale told in Wreck-It Ralph is done in perfect Disney fashion. It is my favorite animated movie of the year by far. If you’ve read my movie reviews before you’ve probably realized I don’t like to give away the story. I enjoy being completely surprised when it comes to entertainment so I write reviews that I would like to read.

With that said, Wreck-It Ralph is very different than the way it was originally advertised. The current commercials show more of what the story actually entails but the movie is totally different from how it was originally marketed. This movie is a MUST SEE. Ok, ok I’ll get to the why:

The character Vanellope Von Schweetz, voiced by Sarah Silverman, is reason enough alone. Her sugary homeland is no allusion to her personality; she’s one tough cookie. Vanellope is from the virtual world of the video game Sugar Rush which is governed by King Candy. I was her for Halloween this year and my boyfriend was Ralph! Check out the post about our costumes here. [I’m listening to the catchy Sugar Rush theme song as I write this.] The visuals in Sugar Rush are fantastic! So many candies and sweets are used in the landscape and characters. It’s absolutely delicious and had me staring at the screen in delight. My friend went to get some candy during the movie and I quickly tossed a five her way and asked for Sno Caps because you just must have candy while watching this. Seeing that Wreck-It Ralph smashes into theaters November 2nd I’m sure you’ll have some candy laying around. 😉

Alright, enough about the little gumdrop girl. All Ralph really wants is to be treated like everyone else. This is a challenge since he plays the role of the “bad guy” in the game Fix It Felix Jr. Despite his visit to “Bad-Anon” he gets creative to be recognized as a hero. His quest to show that he too can win a medal proves to be one where he visits new worlds, makes friends and even saves one from an unfortunate, unwarranted fate. The bad guy is not who you think it is..

There are so many references to video games you’ll have to wait until it comes out on DVD and hover the pause button to catch them all. Toadstools, exclamation points and cherries–oh my!

Let’s not forget the short that precedes Wreck-It Ralph. Paperman is a dashing tale, told in stunning black and white. The characters are adorable and the story is way romantic. The guy reminds me of Roger Radcliffe a little.
