The Sound of Music at Dr. Phillips Center

The Sound of Music will be at the Dr. Phillips Center in Orlando through Sunday. This true and touching story of Maria and the Von Trapp family is filled with wonderful, classic Rogers and Hammerstein songs. If you know the show you’ll be able to appreciate this particularly well done run. If you’ve never experienced The Sound of Music it’s a solid foundational musical that any theatergoer should know about. I became quite acquainted with this show when I was in high school. It was the first production my drama program put on when I was a freshman. I was a crew member for this show, worked and watched from the stage left wing and fell in love with the songs. My Favorite Things, The Lonely Goatherd, So Long, Farewell, and the tender Edelweiss more will surely have you humming on your way out of the Dr. Phillips Center. The Sound of Music’s happy ending always leaves me rooting for the Von Trapps and filled with optimism.

Julie Andrews and Mary Martin are stunning acts to follow but Kerstin Anderson gives the role of Maria new life with her dependable, lovely voice. Song after song she delivers perfection and sprinkles Maria’s innocent joy all over the audience. If you follow Disney Broadway shows then you’ll be familiar with Ashley Brown from Mary Poppins. She’s singing her way through The Sound of Music as The Mother Abbess. Fun fact: Ashley is also the voice of the song Richard Sherman wrote for Disneyland’s 60th Celebration. You’ll hear A Kiss Goodnight on your way out of the park after the fireworks. See more of the cast at TheSoundofMusiconTour.com.

Disclosure: I was invited by the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts to attend this show.
